I work in a for-profit urban hospital complex providing C/L Psychiatric evaluations. Most consultations are for inpatients but the observation status is being utilized more frequently and dedicated units are used for these patients.
We document evaluation and recommendations in the EMR and billing is the last process on the computer. There are inpatient and observation statuses with timeframes. Services provided to observation patients are billed at a lower rate.
