Private rooms
We have a 26 bed unit that has both private and semi-private rooms. They are both useful for pts in different circumstances. Having a roommate can be therapeutic and supportive to some pts and work well. If there is a need for privacy we try to switch rooms to accommodate. Both work well for different reasons.

Here's a real life story of a "near-miss": A patient attempted suicide in his room, his very astute roommate at that time literally averted the tragedy by stopping him from doing it, and immediately reported it to the nurses and the psych techs that day. This roommate saved his life. Just one of the positive benefits of semi-private rooms in inpatient psych units.
