We started shared governance by starting with unit staff meetings and asking the staff what improvements they would like to make on the unit. To initiate it was on a voluntary basis of who wanted to join the unit council. It helps to have food. One manager would bake for the occasion. The council then takes over the meeting and the info is then brought to the manager who then helps solve the issues. Once the staff sees the improvements they continue to take ownership. It's really a great way to get staff buy in.
