New psyche nurse needing advice

By Lori Smock posted 07-26-2015 03:08 PM

I am a new nurse fresh out of nursing school. I love to read books in my spare time. I would like to purchase some easy reads that will help me in my clinical nursing on the psyche floor. I am interested in books that will help me understand better the symptoms, causes, and interventions for a wide range of psyche disorders. Any book suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I asked this same question to a forum of psychiatrist and this is what they responded with:

The Psychiatric Interview by Daniel Carlat; this is an excellent book on how to get ample medical/psych history when you have a time restraint. As an admission nurse this book has been invaluable to me.

Prescriber's Guide: Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology by Stephen M. Stahl; this is a concise book covering common psych drugs we often give out. I've even has residents borrow it from me when we have a psych pt with a uncommom med history.

Goodwin and Guze's Psychiatric Diagnosis by Carol North and Sean Yutzy; another great reference that gives you a holistic view of psychiatric disorders.

FYI: All these books are to be used as reference guides, not comprehensive textbooks. They are small enough (eg. not "textbook sized") to store in my backpack when I go to work so I rely more heavily on them then any textbook though.

Hope this helps!
