What do you guys think about over diagnoses of bipolar 1 disorder in children?

I am doing my clinical orientation with a child and adolescent psychiatrist. He is very careful with making this diagnosis in children and really thinks it is still being overused in the field. I am really curious to hear other's thoughts on this.

Thank you Nancy, for your feedback. Which population category are you seeing more to be misdiagnosed? My thought is male!!!

Rupinder, I would have to agree with your preceptor. The use of this diagnosis is overworked and the kids are over medicated. We need to first look at the family dynamics ,the stresses and experiences of the child, and consider looking at ADHD also. I have inherited a practice from a former NP and I feel she overdiagnosed many of the adolescents with this. By using CBT, PET I believe I am changing the picture of this practice
