PMHCNS to PMHNP

By Sandra Brooks posted 07-27-2011 09:01 PM

I established a nurse owned private practice in FL in 2006, where I am licensed as an ARNP and have prescribed for many years.  I recently completed my DNP degree and would  like to work in CA where only NPs are allowed to prescribe. I would appreciate information on what it would take to add NP to my PMHCNS training and credentialing, and where I would go to get meet the requirements.

You may wish to consider the post doc at Brandman Univ. for PMHNP classes needed to sit for PMHNP exam. Check out their website. With your CNS background you probably can shorten the program by not taking the psychotherapy course, but you will need to do another residency as the focus will be on MH across the lifespan...which is in keeping with the movement toward the ANCC FPMHNP exam.
