Bio

Michael Rice is a Professor Emeritus at the College of Nursing, Anschutz Medical Center, University of Colorado, Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, and a Fellow in the Western Academy of Nursing.   He retired from his role as an Endowed Chair of Psychiatric Mental Health, and Co-Director of the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program at the College of Nursing, Anschutz Medical Center, the University of Colorado at the end of 2021. He came to the College of Nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), where he was a Professor of Psychiatric Nursing and the Founding Associate Director, Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he received the Inaugural Distinguished Service Award in 2013. His baccalaureate degree is from Mount Marty College, in Yankton, South Dakota; his master's degree in psychiatric mental health is from UNMC; and his doctorate in Clinical Research is from the University of Arizona, as a National Research Service Award Fellow. He is a board-certified advanced practice psychiatric nurse. He was the recipient of the Educause Award for Excellence in Information Technology Solutions in 2002, and the Best Corporate Training Model from Education and Information Systems Technologies and Applications (EISTA), International Institute of Informatics in 2003. He is recognized as one of the TOP 15 Psychiatric Nursing Professors in the U.S. He has served as co-Chair of the Psychiatric Expert Panel at the American Academy of Nursing and a member of (a) the Board of Directors for the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Board of Specialty Advisors for Behavioral Health Specialties at Optum Health, and the Board of Directors of the Institute for Behavioral Health Improvement. He has also served as a member of the Evaluation and Outcomes Committee for the Colorado State Innovation Model funded by CMS to transform healthcare in the state of Colorado. His most recent research focuses on Non-VA connected Suicide and the translation of evidence-based practices into clinical settings. He provides national and international consultation on the development of distance psychiatric nursing education, learner-centered online education and advocates the use of distance technology to meet mental health-care needs. He also serves on the National Board of Advisors for Spyglass Consulting, a firm focused on emerging health care technology, whose clientele include Microsoft, Intel, Cisco and Sun Microsystems. His educational work has focused on the use and analysis of social media applications in health care education and the development of professional social networks.
