Screening for Metabolic Syndrome

By Deborah Drumm posted 11-03-2010 09:54 PM

Can anyone suggest a resource on the guidelines for screening our patients for Metabolic Syndrome?
Upon admission to our day program, I do a Psychiatric Assessment and BP, abdominal girth, Height, Weight (BMI), Blood Work: CBC, CMP, HgA1C, TSH, Lipid Profile, C-Reactive Protein, Vitamin D OH, 1,25.
How often are screenings repeated?  Would love to hear from everyone.
Thanks, Deborah Drumm APN, BC  New Jersey

Guidelines we use are for the initation of an atypical antipsychotic and are also done on admission. To montor the biomedical screen specifically we do the following: Weight, BP, BMI, Waist circumference is done baseline, then monthly the first three months. We do them again at 6 months, 9 months and yearly unless clinicaly indicated. Fasting Lipid profile, BS (Hemoglobin AIC if there are any history or family history of diabetes) baseline, 3 months, then annually unless otherwise indicated. Other labs that you mentioned we also do for other rule outs specifically on admission or with clinical changes, but are not part of biomedical monitoring of atypical medication.
