Virtual clinical experiences

By Debra Gottel posted 03-19-2020 03:54 PM

As COVID-19 continues its spread, many clinical sites are closing their doors to students.  Would anyone be interested in forming a group to work on some meaningful simulation experiences that can be used in lieu of some clinical time?  They would need to be all online, so no standardized patients.  I have used a few ( mental status exam, motivational interviewing) but will need several more.  Anyone interested in sharing ideas?

I would love to join this group. I assist with nursing clinicals at our facility so am not a Masters Degree nurse but work often with nursing students.

I am also interested in this group.  I am just beginning a project to look for and add psychiatric-mental health nursing simulation to serve as part of clinical hours for undergraduate students.

Hi Jacque,

Sorry for the delay in response.

I have been searching sites for virtual experiences.  I have not been impressed with Shadow Health or the virtual case studies from the text book.  I was told that the simulations from ATI are good, but I do not have access to them at this time.  I use a lot of the Kahn Academy videos for class, as well as some from Psych U.  At this point I am thinking of writing some case studies and then having each clinical instructor do a post conference each clinical day. It's difficult without the students having any clinical experience, because normally I would give them a diagnostic category and have them write the case study.  I am hopeful that maybe some recovery support groups might open up.  I am also considering asking the independent living/assisted living facilities if they have any residents who may be willing to work a nursing student (learning objectives for the student would be to practice communication, do assessment of coping skills, maybe teach a coping skill, explore therapeutic value of reminiscing) but I am not quite sure what sort of releases, etc we would need for that.

What ideas have you explored?

I think this is a great idea and would be interested in this group.  It is always a great idea to have a few extra minds when attempting to be creative.
