Each month, the Practice Research Integration and Membership Engagement (PRIME) Workgroup, Research Council features a researcher or clinician. This month we are featuring Dr. Princess Fumi Stephanie Hancock, a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Doctor of Nursing Practice at Pool of Bethesda Psychiatric Health & Divine Family and Urgent Care. See below for Dr. Princess Fumi Stephanie Hancock's story and impact on psychiatric mental health nursing!

Dr. Princess Fumi Stephanie Hancock, DNP is an African Princess living in Diaspora known as the Princess of Suburbia(r). She is a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Dr. of Practice, a TEDxTalk Speaker, 17x Amazon Bestselling Author, and Johnson and Johnson Nurse Innovation Fellow. She is also known as the Trauma Care Maestro(tm).  In addition, she is the principal owner of Pool of Bethesda Psychiatric Health, a group of clinics which care for people with mental illness across life span.

My desire is that I leave with a legacy of someone who worked hard to bridge gaps between the youths/ Millennials in Africa and America, using advanced technology to combat trauma.

My area of research is looking at the impact of culture in how youths/ Millennials respond to trauma. Today, many are dealing with the assault of pandemics - social injustice and COVID19 on their psyche. The challenge with focusing on silent cultures such as the black Americans, Africans in Diaspora - is that they do nothing want to come out, due to stigmatization and systemic racism within their communities. Sadly, this same systemic racism exist within the healthcare system.  In order to be able to tackle the situation with our patients, we must tackle that which providers like myself  (an advanced nurse practitioner) face on a daily basis.
