Marian Newton: Featured APNA Member of the Month

Each month, the Research Council Steering Committee features an APNA member. This month, we are featuring Dr. Marian Newton!

    Dr. Newton earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from St. Petersburg Junior College in Florida in 1964, and B.S. in Nursing in 1967 and Master of Nursing with psychiatric specialty degrees in 1972 from the University of Florida. She earned the Ph.D. in pharmacology and psychopharmacology from the University of Nebraska in 1989, and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Russell Sage Graduate School in Troy, New York in 1995.  

    From 1996 to 2020 at SU she taught basic and advanced pharmacology and psychiatric courses to undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Before SU she taught medical-surgical and psychiatric nursing and pharmacology at five schools from 1973-1986, and 1993-1996. From 1986-1996 she was a psychiatric nurse in the outpatient mental health clinic of Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, New York. She has practiced part-time as a PMHNP provider since 2002 in Winchester, Virginia, and she is a part-time instructor of psychiatric nursing courses to schools in Massachusetts and West Virginia.

    She is sole or corresponding author on a majority of 43 peer-reviewed, invited and non-peer-reviewed articles, and 9 invited book chapters on drug therapy and psychiatric practice, research and therapy topics. She has made 24 invited state, national and international presentations on nursing practice and psychopharmacology topics. She is past-president of the Virginia chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and national membership chair for the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. Her selected honors include:

  • One of 60 Gator Great Nurses chosen from 10,000 University of Florida nursing graduates during the first 60 years of the College of Nursing, 2016
  • American Nurses Leadership in Education Fellow, ANEF, of the National League for Nursing, 2014
  • Visiting professor to Thammasat University Faculty of Nursing in Bangkok, Thailand, 2008
  • Certificate of Appreciation for service on the inaugural 1999-2006 Content Expert Panel for Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Examinations of the American Nurses Credentialing Center, 2006
  • Commendation plaque for direct intervention with a threatening mental hygiene clinic patient armed with a pipe bomb taped to his chest at the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, New York, 1987
  • Inducted in Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, 1967

How wonderful to read this feature about my favorite mentor! I think I knew all those great achievements when I was you student, I am not surprised. The missing gift not mentioned is how kind you are to all you know! I think of you often when I am talking with clients. I have my office in Florida and I see clients on Zoom in Virginia where I am licensed. Thank you Marian, so much - I hope you are enjoying your days!
