N-acetylcysteine in OCD treatment

By Linda Cunningham posted 09-15-2013 11:58 AM

In one of my recent clinical experiences, my preceptor used N-acetylcysteine as an adjunct in the treatment of OCD. I had previously worked for many years on medical-surgical floor and had only seen aceytylcysteine used as a respiratory agent. I thought this was interesting. I was not able to find much research or information on this topic, but there is an article in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology that suggests that "N-acetylcysteine may be a safe and effective option to augment standard treatment in patients with refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder" (Afshar, Roohafza, Mohammad-Beigi, Jahangard, Shokouh, Sadeghi, & Hafezian, 2012).

Has anyone had any success with this?
