Psychiatric Nurse Practrioner Programs

Hello,

I need some direction.  I do not think my situation is an isolated one.  I want to go to school to be PNP.  I really need to do this on-line.  My road block is my grades.  My first degree in Psych I did not do very well my GPA is about a 2.45.  When I decided to become an RN I worked real hard and achieved a 3.5 GPA at the same institution.  So these grades are averaged together which gives a 2.9.  I am wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions?  I do have a letter from the college congratulating me on my acidemic achievement.  My first degree was in 1994.  I graduated Rn school in 2006.

I appreciate any insight that can be offered.

Thank you,

Robin

I am not so sure the problem is as dire as you may think. IIRC, I believe graduate programs would admit you on a provisional basis and after completing a number of credit hours with the requisite GPA, you would be admitted on a regular basis. Look into it.

Hello! By "PNP", I assume you mean psychiatric NP, not pediatric? You are right, your scenario is not an isolated problem, I've spoken to many RN's who would like to go back but lack the GPA or just don't have the time to go the traditional route. StonyBrook (SUNY) has an online Psych NP program and I think they used to consider admissions for those under 3.0, you will need to check their website. Other Psych NP programs online include University of South Alabama, Drexel, University of Cincinnati, and University of Missouri. Graceland University also offers an online Family NP program, sort of an RN to MSN bridge for those without a BSN. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 hours of graded undergraduate coursework is what they require. New programs are popping up all the time so you need to keep searching the web, and remember, by 2015 NP will be doctorate entry level only. Hope this helps!
