State of Military and Veteran Care Education in Colleges and Universities

What has been your experience as a Nursing student or Nursing Faculty about education for Veteran care? What resources have you used, such as the Enhancing Veterans' Care (EVC) Tool Kit (ANCC)? American Academy of Nursing (AAN) resources? National League of Nursing (NLN) resources? VA resources? If your nursing program does not cover the topic of veteran health care, please let me know, also. Thank you.

I recently retired from the VA. I am a Veteran and have found that the students who came to us for their clinicals do not get educated on veteran care in their courses. One of the things I did was provide in services to my staff and to students as an introduction to military culture. I was invited a couple of times to be a guest speaker in a class as part of a diversity curriculum in other healthcare programs.  There are veterans and active military everywhere who would be more than willing to help teach about our culture. In the meantime, here are some resources that are very helpful:
1. Psycharmor.com
2. Maketheconnection.com
3. Deployment psychology centers of excellence
4. The Center for Telehealth & Technology (T2)
5. DVBIC (TBI)
6. Department of Defense (DoD)- links to several resources.
7. Dave Grossman (he is an expert on veterans and the psychological effects of killing, known as "killology")

I hope this is helpful as a start for getting this information to nursing students.
Thanks for your question and interest.
