I would suggest you call the local Alzheimer's Association to determine if they have clinicians who provide the service. MCB

National Nurses Week kicked off yesterday, May 6th, and continues through the 12th (Florence Nightingale’s 192nd birthday!). This week helps to educate the public about the vital roles that we, the nearly 3.1 million registered nurses of all types and specialties across the nation, play in meeting the health care needs of the American people. It’s also a week for us to celebrate and reaffirm our commitment to the profession of nursing. This year’s theme is “Nurses: Advocating, Leading, Caring.”  While we all have different roles within psychiatric mental health nursing – from providing care at the bedside to researching new models of care, we all without a doubt advocate for our patients and our profession, serve as leaders in both nursing and mental health, and care for persons with mental illness on a daily basis. Doing so is integral to our PMH nursing practice! I feel privileged to witness firsthand your zeal and dedication every day - not just in my work as a psychiatric-mental health nurse, but also as President of this incredible association of professionals. Having experience working in Europe in forensic psychiatric services I concur that in many countries forensic psychiatric nurses work in a wide variety of environments.  Because of the nature of their work, often working in locked environments removed from other client groups, they often feel isolated and ignored regarding that work that they do.  They might not stand back from the work that they do and recognize that they are a "forensic psychiatric nurse."  I think that it is important that nurses who work with clients who have gone through a judicial process receive the support and education that they need to be able to deliver care in a professional manner.  In my previous experience overesas I found that forensic units in psychiatric hospitals often became the dumping ground for aggressive or difficult to manage clients from regular psychiatric units.  Has anyone else experienced this phenomena?

Collaboration, Commitment and Consultation - The beginning of spring is always such a flurry of activity – the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and excitement for the year is at a high. It is hard for me to believe that I am already half way through this year as your President – the past six months have been such a whirlwind of activities! The spring season (come a little early this year for many of us) has reminded me of how important it is for us to take a moment to breathe, enjoy the outdoors, and smell the roses. This sense of rejuvenation gives us a chance to embrace and renew our practice as psychiatric-mental health nurses. Here at APNA, we are taking the opportunity to cultivate and maintain our efforts of collaboration, commitment, and consultation within the association. I’d like to take a moment to explore some of these worthwhile endeavors going on within APNA and PMH nursing. [more]
